The Summit Herald of November 26, 1938 reported on the community Thanksgiving service held the previous day in the high school auditorium. The service was conducted by the clergy of many houses of worship in Summit: Calvary Episcopal Church, Oakes Memorial Church, the Swedish Lutheran Church, the Jewish Community Center, the Central Presbyterian Church, the Baptist Church, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Mayor read President Roosevelt’s Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. On the previous Sunday, the Jewish Community of Summit, along with other congregations around the U.S., held a special prayer service for the Jews of Germany [nb: this was two weeks after Kristalnacht].
